Growing wild only in South East Asia, this tree (Mitragyna Speciosa) is better known as Thom or Kratom in the United States. Some research has been done but not sufficient for Kratom to be considered as a modern pain medication yet. It contains an ingredient called “mitragynine” which, while not as effective as morphine, can be extracted from the leaves. It appears that there have been some efforts to convert mitragynine into 7-hydrohydroxymitragynine, which is far more powerful than morphine as a pain killer - and in the future, could even be used as a modern opiate-type medication.

Kratom has a calming, relaxing euphoric effect, similar to that of opiates and works in the same way, but doesn’t appear to cause the same degree of dependency like a true opiate would. Those who know these things recommend that users should not use Kratom more than twice a week to avoid tolerance build-up in the body thus requiring the user to need more and more of it – hence the dependency! The active alkaloids in Kratom appear to bind only with the delta opiod receptors, which causes little if any addiction. Some researchers state that the mu binding action does increase if large amounts of mitragynine are ingested – in other words, the more leaves you chew, the level of binding to delta receptors increases and, in even higher consumption, a crossover effect to the mu receptors takes place, which would result in the mild addiction as noted earlier.

Kratom is a controlled substance (illegal) in Thailand, Bhutan, Australia, Finland, Denmark, Poland, Lithuania, Malaysia and Myanmar (Burma). In Malaysia, kratom is scheduled under the Poisons Act. In Thailand, Kratom is scheduled in Category 5 of the Narcotics Acts (1979) which is the same Category as cannabis and magic mushrooms (the least punitive category). In Europe, the leaf is legal and highly valued as it seems to provide healing for many conditions and ailments (such as depression, anxiety, opiate withdrawal, alcohol withdrawal, chronic fatigue, immune system disorders, and other related health conditions).

Although this is not confirmed, millions of Americans are said to rely on Kratom for various conditions and reasons - including recreational use - and it’s widely available online in different forms, such as capsules, dried crushed leaves or as a powder, which can be brewed into a tea. It’s also available in pill form, formed from the resin extracts. As a tea, it tastes horrible – very bitter, but can be added to regular tea or you can chase it down with something sweet-tasting.
